Smartphone Processors: Things that Matters to Buy One

While buying a smartphone you must have read something like this phone has octa-core processor with 1.8GHz clocking speed and things like that.

Architecture

Architecture or can say the design is the basic and most important feature of any chipset. Before making any chipset we only have a silicon chip, a small silicon chip. To maximize, the use of its area we need an architecture like when we made a home and hire an architecture. Similarly, ARM (Advanced RISC Machine) is the company which gives the design to built the processors with the highest efficiency.

With the improvement of technology, ARM also designs and improves its work on processors. The latest architecture of the of ARM for smartphone chips is Cortex-A75 which is suitable for most of the devices including Smartphones.

Technology

Basically, technology means which type of technology is using by the company. Good technology means the better efficiency of the processor. Transistors play the most important role if we talk about technology.


Every Chipset contains millions of small chip through which the information is being transferred, small gaps between them results in increased efficiency and battery life of the device. The size of the transistors matters a lot while comparing smartphones. Big size means time-consuming and slow processing.

Best size till is 10nm achieved by Qualcomm in Snapdragon  835 with 3 billion transistors. The number also matters, greater the number greater the speed.

Cores

Cores are like the hand of any CPU. It is related to multitasking. If you buy a phone with a greater number of cores then its multitasking ability will be good. But still, this number does not help always. Because if your transistor size is 28nm but you get octa-core processor then it will fail in in battery life. Because cores affect battery, on the other hand, transistor saves battery. So, less size with less number of cores is better than a big number of size and a big number of cores.

MediaTek has made a processor of deca-cores, it means its multitasking is brilliant but battery and heating problems may arrive.

Clock Speed

You must have seen this thing in many smartphones and PCs. Like, this smartphone has 1.2GHz speed this one is 2.0GHz. Clock speed is basically the switching of the circuit. It means how many times it can switch (on/off) to perform a certain task. The unit Giga Hertz describes the speed in billion per second means your processor can switch 1.2 billion times in a second. So, we usually relate this to the speed of the processor and this is obvious.

But, this usually affects least on the performance of the processor.It can happen if you have a processor with old technology but it's clocking is higher than one with new technology based processor. Then it means the new one will give you good performance rather than old one. Because it the new one performs the same task with less switching than old one.

Before you buy any smartphone you must now watch every single thing from starting.

First, watch the architecture of the processor higher the number of Cortex higher the results. Then, the technology or size of the transistors, smaller transistors means less time and less battery consumption. After this number of cores, higher number results in more multi tasking but heating and battery life may be comprised. Then the speed of processor means clocking speed, higher speed means good performance in less time. 


But everything should be in the order, a good number of cores but architecture is poor then the processor will not perform efficiently. Similarly, clocking speed does not determine everything other things matters first.
